If you have not taken a SIA course after the above date, you are required to take an upskilling course in order to renew your SIA badge and continue working within the security sector.
The training has been made mandatory by the Security Industry Authority in order to recognise the new risks and challenges of modern security guard jobs.

Is this Security Guard Top Up security course for me?
To work in any security role in the UK, you must hold a valid licence granted by the Security Industry Authority (SIA).
Working without one or with an expired licence is a criminal offence. You will need to take a top up course when you renew your SIA licence after October 2021.
SIA Certificate Holders will be brought up to date with the new licence-linked qualifications requirements to continue working as a Security Guard.
The new SIA top up qualification is now required as part of every security guard’s career.
This SIA Security Guard top up course is mandatory in order to successfully renew your licence and continue employment within the security sector.
It is designed for learners who currently hold a SIA badge to work as a security guard and have not yet been brought up to date with the newest regulations introduced in October 2021.
A top up course is not required every time you renew your licence, just when the SIA introduces new guidance.

FAQS
How long is the Security Guard Top Up training?
The Security Officer top up training is a half day course. If you require the Emergency First Aid at Work qualification, you can book a course including EFAW to your package. This will make it a 1 day course.
Your SIA trainer will assess your skills with a mix of multiple choice exams and practical exercises.
How long does it take to receive my results?
Results are available within 14 working days. You can then begin the process of officially applying for your licence with the SIA. You can do this without presenting your certificate as proof, providing you have the pass result of your exam.
What will I learn during the top up course?
The training covers new content introduced by the SIA, including:
- Terror threats and the role of the security operative in the event of a threat
- Minimising risk to personal safety
- Actions to take in relation to global (or critical) incidents

Can I still work in security with a criminal record?
If you have a criminal record, it is still possible to renew your SIA licence.
The SIA will carry out a background check to look for things that may suggest you could be a risk to the public, or that you are not suitable to work in the industry, such as dishonest behaviour. Any convictions, warnings, cautions, absolute/conditional discharges, admonishments or charges awaiting trial for offences will need to be disclosed as part of your renewal application.
Check your likelihood of passing the criminality checks with the SIA’s criminal record indicator.
You will automatically be rejected for a SIA licence unless you have been free of the sentence restrictions for a conviction for at least 12 months (up to 5 years in more serious cases) before your licence application.
