Is this Door Supervisor Top Up security course for me?

To work in any security role in the UK, you must hold a valid licence granted by the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

Working without one or with an expired licence is a criminal offence. Before renewing your SIA licence, you need to take a top up course in line with the newly introduced guidance as of October 2021.

If you do not currently hold an SIA licence but would like to become a Door Supervisor, you can take our full Door Supervisor course in Derby.

The new SIA top up security training is now required as part of every door supervisor’s career.

This SIA Door Supervisor top up course is required for learners who currently hold a licence from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to work as a door supervisor and need to renew their licence after October 2021.

This course is for Door Supervisors who are renewing their SIA security badge on or after 1st October 2021.

A top up course is not required every time you renew your licence, they are introduced when the SIA introduces new guidance that security guards need to be brought up to date with. The top up training is mandatory in order to continue employment within the security sector.

FAQS

How far in advance of my licence expiry can I take a top up course?

You can complete a top up training course up to 3 years before you require your licence to be renewed. This means you can take the course whenever is most convenient to you, even if it is a long time until your licence expires.

This top up qualification will remain valid until you apply for your SIA renewal. You can apply to renew your licence up to 4 months prior to your expiry date.

How long is the Door Supervisor Top Up training?

The Upskilling Top Up training is a 2-day course. If you require the Emergency First Aid at Work qualification, you can book a course including EFAW to your package. This will make it a 3-day course.

Your SIA trainer will assess your skills with a mix of multiple choice exams and practical exercises.

What will I learn during the top up course?

The training covers new content introduced by the SIA, including:

  • Recognising terrorism
  • The use of security equipment
  • Effective crowd control techniques
  • Physical Intervention

How do I book?

To book your place on a security renewal course, first you need to determine whether you need a course that includes the First Aid qualification.

  • If you do require EFAW to be added to your package, choose an option above with a green First Aid button.
  • If you do not require EFAW on your course as you already hold this qualification, choose an option above with a grey First Aid button.

Once you have selected your preffered date, click the black ‘book now‘ button.

Alternatively, call our friendly customer service line on 0800 121 6020

Can I still work in security with a criminal record?

It is still possible to renew your SIA licence if you have criminal offences on your record.

Any convictions, warnings, cautions, absolute/conditional discharges, admonishments or charges awaiting trial for offences will need to be disclosed as part of your renewal application. The SIA will look for things that show you might be a risk to the public, or that you are not suitable to work in the industry, such as dishonest behaviour.

You will automatically be rejected for a SIA licence unless you have been free of the sentence restrictions for a conviction for at least 12 months (up to 5 years in more serious cases) before your licence application.

Check your likelihood of passing the criminality checks with the SIA’s criminal record indicator.

More FAQs

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) is the UK regulator for the private security industry. All of the SK Training SIA training courses are accredited through level 2 or level 3 qualifications to meet the SIA standard, allowing you to apply for your SIA badge on completion of the course.

The security top up training is just for individuals with a valid security licence who need to be brought up to date with the new requirements as of October 2021. Individuals who have completed their training after October 2021 will not need to take the top up course.

The training is mandatory in order to carry one working within the security industry.

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Pass an ID check
  • Be eligible to work in the UK
  • Hold a valid First Aid qualification
  • Complete SIA approved training
  • Undergo a criminal records check

(Having a criminal record will not necessarily mean you will be refused a licence. Check if you are eligible with the SIA criminal record indicator)

It became a legal requirement in April 2021 to have an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification prior to completing your SIA training.

You can add the First Aid qualification to your SK Training training package when you book your course. The first aid training will be delivered on the first day of your course.

You don’t need to add this qualification to your package if you already have a valid First Aid qualification (or equivalent). This needs to be from a course you attended in person. (Online course certificates do not comply)

If you already have a First Aid certificate, it must have at least 1 year remaining from your course start date.

The courses are typically made up of practical assessments and multiple choice examinations, of which you must get at least 70% on each to pass. There are 40 questions in each test, so this means you must get 28 or more correct.

Results are available within 14 working days. You can then begin the process of officially applying for your licence with the SIA. You can do this without presenting your certificate as proof, providing you have the pass result of your exam.

To apply for an SIA licence, you need to complete an online application form with the SIA on the government website.

You will then need to visit a post office in person to have your ID documents checked, photocopied and notarised. Make sure to take your SIA application reference number and original copies of the required documents. You’ll also be required to submit a photograph for your licence and a signature, which will also appear printed on the card. Your post office will also collect the £190 licence application fee set by the SIA.

Generally, the SIA states they aim to process a minimum of 80% of applications within 25 working days, but it is not unusual for it to take around six weeks.
