Is this Door Supervisor security course for me?

To work in any security role in the UK, you must hold a licence granted by the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

Working without one is a criminal offence. Before applying for your SIA licence, you need to gain a security qualification, such as this one.

By completing the Door Supervisor training course, you will be able to gain your SIA Door Supervisor licence and start work in the security industry.

  • A Door Supervisor Licence allows you to work BOTH as a door supervisor AND as a security guard
  • A Security Officer Licence ONLY permits you to work in security guard roles.

Already have a Door Supervisor licence and need to be brought up to date with the new regulations as of October 2021? Or did your previous Door Supervisor licence expire less than 3 years ago? You can take our Door Supervisor Refresher course instead.

FAQS

How long is the Door Supervisor Top Up training?

The Door Supervisor security training is a 6-day course. If you require the Emergency First Aid at Work qualification, you can book a course that includes EFAW to your package. This will make it a 7-day course.

Your SIA trainer will assess your skills with a mix of multiple choice exams and practical exercises.

How do I book?

To book your place on one of our security courses, first you need to determine whether you need a course that includes the First Aid qualification.

  • If you do require EFAW to be added to your package, choose an option above with a green First Aid button.

Where can I work with a Door Supervisor licence?

The Door Supervisor qualification allows you to work within BOTH Door Supervisor and Security Guard roles.

The door supervisor licence is very versatile and the skills you’ll learn during your course will set you up to work in a variety of industries and roles. This licence provides you with a much wider range of career options and job opportunities than the Security Guard licence.

These include but are not limited to:

  • Working in licensed premises
  • Bouncer at pubs, bars and nightclubs
  • Protecting private property or members of the public
  • Security on film sets & television studios
  • Airport security officers
  • Visible presence in retail environments
  • Security for construction sites
  • Security concierge
  • Hospital security guards
  • Crowd control & security for sports events
  • Music festival & public event security
  • Prevent and detect theft & loss as a store detective
  • Special events including red carpet
  • Protecting offices, council buildings, and universities

If you would like our help with employment opportunities, we can help you secure a role within the security industry following the completion of your course.

What is it like to work within licensed premises?

When working within a licensed business, it’s your job to ensure the safety and protection of customers, staff and the venue, with the added presence of alcohol. You may be confronted with conflict situations, and will need to assist the management in ensuring the premises are run lawfully and responsibly.

Door supervisors/bouncers/nightlife security guards tend to be positioned at the entrance, monitoring and controlling admission. You may also be expected to patrol the venue, as well as escort people from the premises for various reasons, such as those who are drunk and disorderly, threatening others or suspected of carrying or dealing illegal drugs.

This Door Supervisor course contains physical intervention and conflict resolution elements which are incredibly useful life skills that can be applied to a variety of situations.

What are the responsibilities of Door Supervisors?

  • Screening individuals for suitability to enter a building/event/venue
  • Monitoring and controlling admission, including checking ID documents
  • Maintaining queue control, watching for any signs of trouble
  • Checking that customers meets the required dress code for the venue or event
  • Using radio equipment to maintain contact with other staff and security personnel
  • Searches of illegal or banned items, including body and bag searches
  • Patrolling, watching behaviour and dealing with conflict inside and outside the venue
  • Responding quickly to emergency situations, including fire alarms, security breaches, bomb threats and medical emergencies
  • Working closely with venue staff, police, first aid and emergency response teams
  • Reporting/recording any issues or problems

Door supervisors have the authority to refuse entry to any individual they consider unsuitable, in line with employer instructions.

Can I still work in security with a criminal record?

If you have a criminal record, it does not automatically mean you will be refused a licence.

Any convictions, warnings, cautions, absolute/conditional discharges, admonishments or charges awaiting trial for offences will need to be disclosed as part of your application. The SIA will consider how relevant any offences are, how recent, and what punishments were handed out before making a decision.

You will automatically be rejected for a SIA licence unless you have been free of the sentence restrictions for a conviction for at least 12 months (up to 5 years in more serious cases) before your licence application.

Check your likelihood of passing the criminality checks with the SIA’s criminal record indicator.

More FAQs

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) is the UK regulator for the private security industry. All of the SK Training SIA training courses are accredited through level 2 or level 3 qualifications to meet the SIA standard, allowing you to apply for your SIA badge on completion of the course.

The security top up training is just for individuals with a valid security licence who need to be brought up to date with the new requirements as of October 2021. Individuals who have completed their training after October 2021 will not need to take the top up course.

The training is mandatory in order to carry one working within the security industry.

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Pass an ID check
  • Be eligible to work in the UK
  • Hold a valid First Aid qualification
  • Complete SIA approved training
  • Undergo a criminal records check

(Having a criminal record will not necessarily mean you will be refused a licence. Check if you are eligible with the SIA criminal record indicator)

It became a legal requirement in April 2021 to have an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification prior to completing your SIA training.

You can add the First Aid qualification to your SK Training training package when you book your course. The first aid training will be delivered on the first day of your course.

You don’t need to add this qualification to your package if you already have a valid First Aid qualification (or equivalent). This needs to be from a course you attended in person. (Online course certificates do not comply)

If you already have a First Aid certificate, it must have at least 1 year remaining from your course start date.

The courses are typically made up of practical assessments and multiple choice examinations, of which you must get at least 70% on each to pass. There are 40 questions in each test, so this means you must get 28 or more correct.

Results are available within 14 working days. You can then begin the process of officially applying for your licence with the SIA. You can do this without presenting your certificate as proof, providing you have the pass result of your exam.

To apply for an SIA licence, you need to complete an online application form with the SIA on the government website.

You will then need to visit a post office in person to have your ID documents checked, photocopied and notarised. Make sure to take your SIA application reference number and original copies of the required documents. You’ll also be required to submit a photograph for your licence and a signature, which will also appear printed on the card. Your post office will also collect the £190 licence application fee set by the SIA.

Generally, the SIA states they aim to process a minimum of 80% of applications within 25 working days, but it is not unusual for it to take around six weeks.
