When should I complete my Security Officer Refresher Training?

You can complete your refresher training as early as three years before your licence is due for renewal. This gives you the freedom to choose a training date that suits your schedule, even well in advance of your expiry date.

Once you’ve finished the course, your qualification remains valid until you submit your SIA renewal application. You can apply to renew your licence up to four months before it runs out, and any remaining time on your current licence will be carried over — so renewing early won’t cost you any time.

How long does the Security Officer Refresher Training take?

The Security Officer Refresher course runs over 2 days. On Day 1, you’ll complete the Security Emergency First Aid at Work (SEFAW) qualification, which is a mandatory part of the course. This session typically runs from 9:30am to 4:00pm.

Day 2 covers the refresher training itself, running from 8:30am to 5:00pm, and includes updated SIA content such as legislation changes, safety procedures, and practical assessments.

Is the Refresher Training mandatory for licence renewal?

Yes. As of April 1st 2025, completing the Refresher Training is a mandatory requirement for renewing your SIA Security Guard licence.

What is the training experience like on the course?

What assessments are involved in the course?

The course includes:

• Multiple-choice exams covering theoretical knowledge
• Practical assessments demonstrating physical intervention skills

Can I renew my SIA licence if I have a criminal record?

Having a criminal record doesn’t automatically prevent you from renewing your SIA licence. The SIA assesses each application individually, considering the nature, seriousness and timing of any offences.

Use the SIA’s Criminal Record Indicator to evaluate your eligibility before renewing.

What should I bring to the course?

Please bring:

• Valid photo ID (e.g, passport or driving licence)
• Proof of address (e.g, utility bill or bank statement)
• Comfortable clothing suitable for practical exercises

How long will it take to recieve my results?

Results are available within 14 working days. You can then begin the process of officially applying for your licence with the SIA. You can do this without presenting your certificate as proof, providing you have the pass result of your exam.
